Achaval Ferrer La Consulta 2005, Malbec

by Eugene Bergen

Today we are tasting the great Vietti Rocche 2007 next to the Finca Altamira 2005 from Achaval Ferrer.

Opened the Altamira one day in advance. Not necessary really, but kept it overnight. That did not hurt either. Deep, jam and completely opaque in color, purple on the edge. Mouth filling fruit, blackberries and cassis, slight acidity as well, very Malbec, thick, fat wine, appealing, very accessible and easy to appreciate for less trained palates. Not tremendously complex but supple and jammy. It's nice before tasting the Vietti Rocche but not nearly the same depth. It may not be fair to compare both wines like for like as this Malbec is about 2.5x less expensive but truth be told: The Vietti turns out to be of a truly different caliber.
