Chateau Palmer is one of my all time favourites. This top chateau is at its best a wine with a fabulous richness and subtlety. In those cases it has an intensity in the fruit that I sometimes even miss in the premier Crus. The prices of the Palmer have been steadily rising in recent years: Strangely enough mainly the recent vintages. A phenomena that continues to amaze me: Some of the top vintages, at their peak of maturity, are more affordable than recent vintages that still require many years of development.

Favourite vintages (at least out the ones I have tasted) are 1983, 1989 (my nr. 1) and 2000. I have high expectations of the 2005 and 2009 and am looking forward to taste the 2004 and 2008 since both Palmers get high scores while they are more affordable than the top vintages.

One of the sexiest wines for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years is undoubtedly the 2000 Palmer. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine has an almost exotic floral nose, soft, undulating tannins, and tremendous opulence and flesh, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, silky tannins, and loads of floral notes intermixed with blue and black fruits as well as hints of smoke and incense in its complex aromatics. This wine is drinking beautifully and should continue to do so for up to two more decades.
